Salam Alejkum!

It's friday 6.4. and we are moving from Ankara with all our equipment. We take a short national flight to Van, a city in the east of Turkey.

The weather forecast is not good but still we can see some snow-covered peaks from the plane. One of the biggest lakes in Turkey is the salt lake Van. Right after landing we are covered by the atmosphere of the busy city of Van which is very different from the well developed city of Ankara. Some of the local driver offeres us his service to drive us from the airport to the bus station from where we might find some transportation possibility for our 11 men team. After some negotiation we found a small bus which will drive us to Adilcevaz from where we will start the climb to Suphan Dagi, the second highest peak of Turkey with 4061 m, perfect for acclimatization and testing turkish snow. Of course every good business you have to finish with a drink. Here it is a cup of tea ;) People here are very friendly and try to help as good as possible.

We found accomodation in a low class hotel. Acctualy it is the only available hotel in Adilcevaz. In a small restaurant we asked for a beer after a delicious meal but as there is a mosque around the corner it is forbiden to drink here. Finally we found also a small stinky pub - the only place they serve beer here. With some local teachers we discuss the history of the kurdish nation and local culture.

It's Saturday morning and we are leaving with a small school bus to Harmantepe, the starting point of Suphan (guess how we managed that bus ;) The village Harmantepe lies under the vulcano and after couple hundred meters we can already start ski touring on snow. After 4,5 hours climb we are on the summit covered in haze with strong wind and low temperetures. The ski descent was difficult in hard snow first but later down we had nice powder. Last part we again have to walk with skis on our backpacks. Children are welcomming us in the small kurdish village with "Hello mister uot ýz jor nejm - so we share their smile and wait for the bus.

Today we will move to Dogubeyazyt. It is a small town close to the Armenian and Iranian border under the mistical mountain of Ararat. Next 3 days we should have stable weather so we will try to use for the climb.

Hope to report after reaching the summit of Ararat soon ...
